Description Preview

A Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability (CWE-918) was discovered in M-Files Server products with versions before 22.1.11017.1. The vulnerability exists in the preview function, which allowed attackers to make queries from the server with certain document types that reference external entities. This could potentially allow an attacker to access internal services, scan internal networks, or exfiltrate data from the affected server.

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-41809) affects the M-Files Server preview functionality, which is used to generate previews of documents stored in the system. The SSRF vulnerability allows an attacker to make the server initiate connections to arbitrary destinations by manipulating document content that references external entities. When the preview function processes these documents, it could follow these references and make requests to internal or external systems using the server's privileges. This could potentially expose sensitive information, allow access to internal services not normally accessible from outside networks, or enable further attacks against internal systems.

Remediation

Organizations using affected versions of M-Files Server should upgrade to version 22.1.11017.1 or later, which contains fixes for this vulnerability. If immediate upgrading is not possible, consider implementing the following temporary mitigations:

  • Restrict access to the preview functionality to trusted users only
  • Implement network-level controls to limit outbound connections from the M-Files Server
  • Monitor server logs for unusual outbound connection attempts
  • Consider using a web application firewall to filter potentially malicious requests
