Description Preview

A Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been identified in the FreePBX voicemail module, specifically in the page.voicemail.php file. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to inject malicious scripts that can execute when viewed by users with access to the FreePBX administration interface. The vulnerability occurs due to insufficient validation and sanitization of user inputs. When exploited, attackers could potentially steal session cookies, capture credentials, or perform actions on behalf of authenticated users.

Overview

The vulnerability exists in the FreePBX voicemail module, which is a component of the FreePBX open-source PBX system widely used for managing Asterisk-based phone systems. The affected file, page.voicemail.php, fails to properly sanitize user input before rendering it in the web interface, allowing attackers to inject arbitrary JavaScript code. This vulnerability can be exploited remotely and may lead to unauthorized access to the FreePBX system, data theft, or system compromise if successfully exploited. The issue affects versions prior to 14.0.6.25 of the voicemail module.

Remediation

To address this vulnerability, system administrators should immediately upgrade the FreePBX voicemail module to version 14.0.6.25 or later. The patch identified by commit ID 12e1469ef9208eda9d8955206e78345949236ee6 has been released to fix this issue. If immediate upgrading is not possible, administrators should consider implementing additional security controls such as web application firewalls to filter potentially malicious requests, limiting access to the FreePBX administration interface to trusted IP addresses, and regularly monitoring system logs for suspicious activities.
