Description Preview

IBM Aspera Faspex versions 5.0.0 through 5.0.7 are susceptible to a denial of service attack due to the absence of API rate limiting mechanisms. This vulnerability allows an attacker to overwhelm the system by sending excessive API requests, potentially causing service disruption for legitimate users.

Overview

CVE-2023-27279 affects IBM Aspera Faspex, a file-sharing and collaboration platform. The vulnerability stems from the application's failure to implement proper rate limiting on its API endpoints. Without appropriate rate limiting, an authenticated user could send an excessive number of API requests in a short period, consuming server resources and potentially rendering the service unavailable to other users. This vulnerability has been assigned IBM X-Force ID 248533 and affects versions 5.0.0 through 5.0.7.

Remediation

Organizations using affected versions of IBM Aspera Faspex should upgrade to a patched version as recommended by IBM. In addition, implementing network-level protections such as web application firewalls configured to detect and block abnormal request patterns can provide an additional layer of defense. Organizations should also monitor API usage patterns to detect potential abuse and consider implementing their own rate-limiting mechanisms at the network perimeter if possible.
