Description Preview

Multiple critical vulnerabilities (CWE-787 Out-of-bounds Write and CWE-416 Use-After-Free) have been identified in SOLIDWORKS Desktop from Release 2021 through Release 2023. These vulnerabilities exist in the DWG and DXF file reading procedure and could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the victim's system when opening specially crafted malicious files. This poses a significant risk to organizations using affected SOLIDWORKS versions, as it could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or system compromise.

Overview

SOLIDWORKS Desktop contains multiple memory corruption vulnerabilities in its DWG and DXF file processing components. These vulnerabilities include Use-After-Free, Out-of-bounds Write, and Heap-based Buffer Overflow issues that could be exploited when a user opens a specially crafted malicious file. A successful attack could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the current user. These vulnerabilities affect all SOLIDWORKS Desktop versions from Release 2021 through Release 2023 and represent a significant security risk for engineering and design organizations that commonly exchange these file formats.

Remediation

Users should immediately update to the latest version of SOLIDWORKS Desktop that contains patches for these vulnerabilities. If updating is not immediately possible, implement the following mitigations:

  • Exercise caution when opening DWG and DXF files from unknown or untrusted sources
  • Consider implementing application whitelisting to prevent unauthorized code execution
  • Use a limited-privilege account when working with SOLIDWORKS to minimize the impact of potential exploitation
  • Consider using network segmentation to isolate workstations running vulnerable SOLIDWORKS versions
  • Monitor systems for unusual activity that might indicate compromise
