Description Preview

CVE-2023-28304 is a remote code execution vulnerability affecting Microsoft ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) and OLE DB (Object Linking and Embedding Database) components. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on affected systems when exploited successfully. The issue stems from improper handling of data in database connectivity components that are widely used in Microsoft environments.

Overview

This vulnerability affects Microsoft ODBC and OLE DB components, which are database interface technologies widely used in Windows environments. When successfully exploited, an attacker could execute malicious code with the same privileges as the current user. If the user has administrative privileges, the attacker could take complete control of the affected system, install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. The vulnerability is particularly concerning for applications and services that use these database connectivity components to interact with databases.

Remediation

  1. Apply the security updates provided by Microsoft as soon as possible.
  2. Install the latest Microsoft security patches available through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  3. If immediate patching is not possible, consider implementing the following temporary mitigations:
    • Restrict access to systems running applications that use ODBC or OLE DB components
    • Monitor for suspicious database connection attempts
    • Ensure users are not operating with administrative privileges unless necessary
  4. Review and update security configurations for database connectivity in your environment
  5. Implement the principle of least privilege for database connections and user accounts
