Description Preview

The Mediciti Lite WordPress theme by Yudlee themes contains a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting versions 1.3.0 and earlier. This vulnerability can be exploited by authenticated users with subscriber privileges or higher, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts that execute in victims' browsers. When executed, these scripts can steal sensitive information, manipulate web content, or perform actions on behalf of the victim within the context of their session.

Overview

The Mediciti Lite theme for WordPress contains a reflected XSS vulnerability that affects all versions up to and including 1.3.0. This vulnerability requires authentication (subscriber level or higher) to exploit. Reflected XSS vulnerabilities occur when user input is reflected back in responses without proper sanitization or encoding. In this case, the theme fails to properly sanitize or validate user input before reflecting it back in the response, allowing malicious JavaScript code to be executed in a victim's browser when they visit a specially crafted URL. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or other malicious actions performed in the context of the affected user's session.

Remediation

  1. Update the Mediciti Lite theme to a version newer than 1.3.0 if available
  2. If updates are not available, consider implementing additional security measures:
    • Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to filter potentially malicious requests
    • Apply input validation and output encoding in your custom code that interacts with the theme
    • Consider switching to a different, actively maintained theme
  3. Limit user privileges to only those necessary for their role
  4. Regularly audit user accounts to ensure proper access controls
  5. Monitor for suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation attempts
