Description Preview

CVE-2023-32563 is a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) in Ivanti Avalanche that allows unauthenticated attackers to achieve code execution through the RemoteControl server component. This vulnerability enables attackers to navigate outside of restricted directories to access files and commands that should otherwise be inaccessible, potentially leading to remote code execution.

Overview

The vulnerability exists in the Ivanti Avalanche RemoteControl server component, which fails to properly validate user input paths. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this path traversal vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the affected system. This is particularly serious as it requires no authentication, making it easily exploitable by remote attackers. The vulnerability allows attackers to break out of the intended directory structure and access sensitive files or execute commands with the privileges of the application.

Remediation

Organizations using Ivanti Avalanche should immediately upgrade to version 6.4.1 or later, which contains patches for this vulnerability. If immediate patching is not possible, consider implementing the following temporary mitigations:

  • Restrict network access to the RemoteControl server component
  • Implement network segmentation to limit exposure of the vulnerable service
  • Monitor for suspicious activities targeting the RemoteControl server
  • Apply principle of least privilege to the service account running the Avalanche components
