IBM SPSS Modeler versions 17.0, 18.0, 18.2.2, 18.3, 18.4, and 18.5 on Windows platforms has a security vulnerability where end users are required to have access to the server SSL key. This design flaw could allow local users with access to these keys to decrypt communications and obtain sensitive information that should otherwise be protected by encryption.
Overview
This vulnerability (CVE-2023-33842) affects multiple versions of IBM SPSS Modeler on Windows systems. The issue stems from the software's design which requires end users to have access to server SSL keys. In secure implementations, SSL keys should be protected and not accessible to regular users. When users have access to these keys, they can potentially decrypt encrypted traffic, compromising the confidentiality of sensitive data transmitted between the SPSS Modeler client and server. This vulnerability undermines the security benefits of SSL/TLS encryption and could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information.
Remediation
Organizations using affected versions of IBM SPSS Modeler should:
- Update to the latest version of IBM SPSS Modeler as recommended by IBM in their security bulletin
- Implement proper key management practices to restrict access to SSL keys
- Consider implementing additional access controls to limit who can access the application and its configuration files
- Monitor for any suspicious activities that might indicate exploitation of this vulnerability
- Consult the IBM support page (www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7004299) for specific patching instructions and additional security recommendations
