CVE-2024-45040: CVE-2024-45040 is a vulnerability in Consensys gnark library versions prior to 0.11.0 that affects the zero-knowledge property of Groth16 proofs with commitments, potentially exposing sensitive information to unauthorized actors.

Description Preview

The vulnerability in gnark library versions prior to 0.11.0 involves commitments to private witnesses in Groth16, which can break the zero-knowledge property of the proofs. This vulnerability impacts only Groth16 proofs with commitments, not affecting PLONK proofs. An attacker may be able to deduce the actual value if the witness values are small, as they could enumerate all possible choices. However, if the possible choices are large or there are many values committed, it becomes computationally infeasible to enumerate all valid choices. The completeness and soundness of the proofs are not affected by this vulnerability. The issue has been addressed in version 0.11.0 by adding an additional randomized value to mask the committed values at proving time. As a workaround, users can manually commit to a randomized value.

Overview

The vulnerability affects Consensys gnark library versions prior to 0.11.0, impacting the zero-knowledge property of Groth16 proofs with commitments. It allows attackers to potentially deduce the actual values of witnesses if certain conditions are met.

Remediation

To remediate the vulnerability, users are advised to update to version 0.11.0 or later of the gnark library. The fix involves adding an additional randomized value to the list of committed values at proving time to mask the rest of the values. As a workaround, users can manually commit to a randomized value to mitigate the risk of exposure.
