Description Preview
The vulnerability exists in the damon_feed_loop_next_input() function of the Linux kernel. This function is inefficient and fragile to overflows. Specifically, the 'score_goal_diff_bp' calculation can overflow when 'score' is high. The calculation is actually unnecessary because 'goal' is a constant of value 10,000. Calculation of 'compensation' is again fragile to overflow. Final calculation of return value for under-achieving case is again fragile to overflow when the current score is under-achieving the target. This vulnerability has been resolved in the latest updates.
Overview
The vulnerability affects the Linux kernel, specifically the mm/damon/core module. The affected versions are those less than 2d339a1f0f16ff5dea58e612ff336f0be0d041e9 and 4401e9d10ab0281a520b9f8c220f30f60b5c248f in git versioning. In semver versioning, version 6.8 is affected, versions less than 6.8 are unaffected, and versions 6.11.8 and 6.12 are also unaffected.
Remediation
Users are advised to update their Linux kernel to the latest version to resolve this vulnerability. The updates can be found in the official Linux kernel repository: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git
