Description Preview

The picklescan software, a Python package used for vulnerability scanning, has a flaw in its design that only considers standard pickle file extensions in the scope for its vulnerability scan. This allows an attacker to craft a malicious model that uses Pickle and include a malicious pickle file with a non-standard file extension. As the malicious pickle file inclusion is not considered as part of the scope of picklescan, the file would pass security checks and appear to be safe, when it could instead prove to be problematic. This vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS score of 5.3, indicating a medium severity.

Overview

The vulnerability was discovered by Trevor Madge (@madgetr) of Sonatype and was published on 2025-03-03. The vulnerability is identified by the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) as CWE-646, which refers to the reliance on file name or extension of externally-supplied file. The attack vector is network-based and requires low attack complexity with no privileges required.

Remediation

As of now, there is no specific remediation provided for this vulnerability. However, users are advised to update the picklescan software to version 0.0.22 or later, as the vulnerability affects versions less than or equal to 0.0.21.
